Guru Rinpoche (Skt. Padmasambhava) is the founder of Buddhism in Tibet and the principal guru-deity of the Nyingma school. Here in peaceful aspect, he is shown seated on a lotus, sun and moon seat. His right hand, outstretched, holds a vajra - symbol of compassion and skilful means; his left hand holds a skullcup and long-life vase brimming with nectar, showing his realisation of wisdom and emptiness and his mastery of deathlessness. His left elbow supports a khatvanga or trident, symbolizing the consort. His three-coloured robes (white, red and blue) show his attainment of the three vehicles.
